Ammonites are among the most abundant fossils found today. The final catastrophe occurred 65 million years ago when all species were annihilated and the ammonites became extinct. This event apparently coincided with the death of the dinosaurs. Scientists use the various shapes and sizes of ammonite shells that appeared and disappeared through the ages to date other fossils. 

Among famous groups of extinct organisms, Trilobites probably rank second only to the Dinosaurs. Most species of trilobite were between 1 and 3 inches long although fossils have been found up to 26 inches! Trilobites lived during the Paleozoic era; many lived at the bottom of oceans and seas, ingesting the sediment to sort out organic matter. Other species were scavengers or predators.
