Bismuth is one of the first 10 metals to be discovered and has been known since ancient times. Miners in the age of alchemy gave bismuth the name tectum argenti, or "silver being made," in the sense of silver still in the process of being formed within the Earth. Heavier than lead, but without lead's toxicity, Bismuth is important medically and its uses are wide-ranging. 

Bismuth's interesting shapes and colors are like "little Escher sculptures" and interestingly, it is a stone of transformation and change.
